Frida Kahlo, born in 1907, was a Mexican Artist who began to paint in 1925 after a disabling streetcar accident. She underwent approximately thirty operations as an aftermath of the accident. She married artist Diego Rivera in 1929 and divorced him in 1939, only to remarry him in 1940. Originally recognized mostly due to her tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera she eventually built her own reputation as an artist. Besides encouragement and support in the arts, Diego Rivera taught Frida the fundamentals of communism, which she wholeheartedly embraced.

This portrait depicts Diego Rivera at the height of his artistic endeavors as a muralist in Mexico and the United States in 1945. He was dedicated to painting about the Mexican Revolution, the poor and the working class. Married to Frida Kahlo in 1929 lasting 10 years or more.
